Below, you’ll find specific wash care recommendations tailored to different product types, so you can enjoy the beauty and craftsmanship of your Mareen pieces for years to come. By following these guidelines, you’ll keep your pieces looking fresh, vibrant, and full of life.
Organic Kala Cotton Garments & Home Textiles
- Washing: You can machine wash on a gentle cycle with similar colors, or hand wash with cold water.
- Turn Inside Out: For extra care, turn clothes inside out before washing to protect the fabric.
- Avoid Fabric Softener: Refrain from using fabric softeners, as they can coat the fibers and reduce the breathability and natural texture of Kala Cotton.
- Detergent: Use a mild detergent to preserve the fabric’s quality.
- Do Not: Do not bleach or scrub, as this may damage the fibers.
- Avoid Overloading the Washing Machine: Overloading can cause friction between garments, which can lead to fabric damage and loss of shape. Wash your Kala Cotton items in smaller loads to reduce strain on the fibers.
- Drying: Dry your items in the shade to avoid fading and maintain the fabric’s integrity.
- Tumble Drying: Avoid tumble drying to prevent shrinkage and wear.
- Dry Cleaning: Dry cleaning is an option for certain items, but we recommend it only when necessary.
- Pre-Treat Stains: Gently pre-treat stains with a mild stain remover before washing, but avoid harsh chemicals to prevent fabric damage.
- Ironing: Iron on medium heat while the fabric is slightly damp to keep it looking smooth and fresh.
Organic Mulberry Silk Tie-Dye Scarves
- Dry Clean Only: To preserve the delicate nature of the silk and retain its vibrant tie-dye colors, we recommend dry cleaning only.
- Do Not Iron: Avoid ironing the silk directly to preserve its unique tie-dyed texture and luxurious feel.
- Avoid Contact with Fragrances and Chemicals: Keep your silk scarf away from perfumes, lotions, and chemicals to prevent stains and fabric damage.
Newzealand Wool & Tencel Rugs
- Vacuum Regularly: Vacuum your rug once a week, or twice a week in high-traffic areas, to keep it free of dust and debris. Avoid using a vacuum with a rotary brush nozzle or sharp bristles, as these can damage the fibers.
- Avoid Water: Never use water to clean hand-tufted rugs, as it can dissolve the latex that binds the fibers to the backing fabric. For deep cleaning, we always recommend professional cleaning by a specialist. Ensure that no chemicals containing Trichloroethylene are used during cleaning.
- Install a Carpet Pad: A carpet pad provides additional cushioning, making it easier to vacuum and clean the floor underneath. It also absorbs sound and helps prevent winter drafts.
- Clean Stains and Spills Immediately: Act fast when a stain occurs. Blot the area with a clean, white cloth, and use a gentle colorless liquid detergent and water solution to clean the spot. Always rub in one direction only. For stubborn stains, we recommend a carpet cleaning product like TR 101 from Diversey.
- Avoid Dust Build-Up: To reduce dust accumulation, consider walking barefoot or wearing slippers indoors. If necessary, take the rug outside and gently beat it to remove excess dirt.
- Shedding: Light shedding is normal for new, handmade rugs and should reduce after the first month or two. Regular vacuuming will help, but shedding may continue over time. This is not a manufacturing fault.
- Loose Threads: If you notice any loose threads, use scissors to carefully cut them off—do not pull them, as this can cause further damage.
- Storage: When storing your rug, roll it rather than folding it to avoid creases. Store it in a protective bag and keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Reduce Indentation: To avoid harsh indentations from furniture, use furniture coasters to spread out the weight. Regularly move furniture to prevent deep impressions in the fibers.
- Protect from Fading: Prevent sun damage by keeping curtains or blinds closed, or consider ultraviolet window treatments. These will block harmful UV rays and protect the colors of your rug. You can also treat your rug with a carpet protector to help shield it from fading, but be sure to reapply periodically.
